Driving with a gear shift knob that is not right for the car or is tremendously frustrating, and in the long run, it can be dangerous; it's not safe to drive when not all components are compatible or secure. The good news is that replacing the gear shift knob in your car is a simple process that can you can complete all by yourself in just a few minutes. If your gear shifter knob has come loose, or a new one was installed incorrectly, follow these three simple steps to install a perfect, new gear shift knob for your vehicle. Step 1 - Set the Emergency Brake When working on the gear shift knob, you will need to first set the emergency brake into gear to prevent the car from moving or shifting accidently while you work.
Once you have activated the emergency brake, place the car in neutral. This will give you much better control over the gear shift as you work. Step 2 - Screw off the Gear Shift Knob There are two ways in which you can disconnect the old or incompatible gear shift from the shifter. The first way is through a built-in threading it the bottom of the knob and inside the shifter.
If your knob has this threading, simply turn the old knob in a counterclockwise direction and remove it. Alternatively, in your automobile there may also be a screw that holds the knob onto the shifter. You can also use an Allen wrench to remove this set screw and pull the knob straight up.
Step 3 - Install the New Gear Shift Knob Depending on whether you removed the gear shift knob by removing a screw or unthreading the knob from the shifter, you will need to install the new knob onto your existing shifter in the same manner. Tighten the knob, making sure it is secure. Then, test out how well it fits by shifting through the gears a few times and getting a feel for the fit. Be sure to test the new knob while your emergency brake is still engaged to avoid any accidently moving or shifting.
